Link in Bio vs Link in DM: Which Wins?
Link in bio or link in DM? See when each one wins, why a DM removes steps for your viewers, and how to use both together on Instagram.

Every creator hits the same question: where do you send people when a reel says "get the guide"? You can say "link in bio" or you can say "comment GUIDE and I'll DM it to you". The DM wins whenever one reel promotes one specific thing, because it removes steps. The bio link still has a job, though, and the best setup uses both.
Short answer: Use a link in DM when a reel points to one specific offer, such as a guide, a product or a booking page. Use the link in bio as your permanent home base for everything else. The DM gets the right link to the right person in one tap, while the bio link makes people go and look for it.
What is the real difference between a link in bio and a link in DM?
A link in bio lives on your profile. Anyone can find it at any time, but they have to go and get it: leave the reel, open your profile, find the link, tap it, and then often choose the right item from a list.
A link in DM comes to the person. They comment a word, and a message with the link shows up in their inbox a moment later. The link is picked for that exact reel, so there is nothing to choose.
Think of it like a shop. The bio link is the shopfront that is always open. The DM is a friendly assistant who walks up to the customer who just said "I'm interested" and hands them the right product.
Why does a link in DM usually convert better?
Every step between "I want this" and "I have it" loses people. Most viewers watch reels while doing something else, and they will not stop to hunt for a link. Here is what the DM removes.
- No leaving the reel. The viewer types one word in the comments and carries on scrolling. The message waits for them in their inbox.
- No searching. With a bio link, the person must find your profile, then the link, then the right item. With a DM, the link is already the right one.
- No guessing. "Link in bio" often leads to a page with ten items. A DM sent for one reel leads to one thing, written in your own words.
- A reason to reply. Because the viewer started the conversation, they are more likely to read your message and tap the button than to follow a cold link.
- A chance to talk. A DM opens a real conversation. If someone has a question about the price or the format, they can simply answer you.
This is also why the comment itself works as a signal. Someone who types a word under your reel has already said yes. You can read more about that in our guide to comment LINK reels.
When does the link in bio still win?
The DM is not always the right tool. The bio link is better in a few situations, and pretending otherwise would send you the wrong way.
- People who find you without a reel. Someone who lands on your profile from search, a tag or a friend has not commented on anything. The bio link is the only door they have.
- Several things at once. If you sell a course, a coaching call and a free guide, a bio page can show all three. A DM is best for one thing per reel.
- Evergreen and general links. Your website, your shop, your booking page: things you always want people to reach, whether or not a reel promoted them.
- Reels that do not ask for action. If a reel is only entertainment or brand building, there is nothing to comment for and nothing to DM.
- Viewers who skip the comment. Some people never comment, however clear the call to action. They will still tap your bio if they are curious.
Instagram lets you put several links on your profile, so you can give each of your main pages a place. Keep the labels short and put the most important link first.
How do you use both together?
The strongest setup is simple. The reel promotes one thing and asks for a comment. The DM sends that one thing. The bio holds everything else, so the profile never looks empty to someone who clicks through.
Say a Riyadh bakery posts a reel about its new date cake. The last line says "comment CAKE and I'll send you the order link". Everyone who comments gets the order page for that cake in their DMs. The bio link goes to the full menu and the opening hours. Nobody has to choose between the two.
A good habit is to mention the DM first and the bio second, and to keep your wording the same every time. People learn the pattern fast: "when this creator says comment a word, I get the link".
How do you set up a link in DM automatically?
You do not need to reply by hand. A comment-to-DM tool watches the comments on a reel and sends your message to everyone who writes your trigger word. In DmReel, which is free during early access, it takes a few minutes. Instagram's official private replies feature makes it possible: a business can send one private reply to a comment, within 7 days of it.
- Connect your account. Use Instagram's official login with a professional account, Business or Creator.
- Pick the reel. Choose it from your real reels, shown as thumbnails. You can also set the automation for your next reel before you post it.
- Choose the trigger words. For example GUIDE, guide and دليل. Matching is whole-word and ignores capital letters.
- Write the DM. One or two friendly sentences, then a link button. You can add up to two buttons, and each person gets one DM per automation, even if they comment five times.
- Go live. Switch it on and watch DMs sent and button taps for that reel.

FAQ
- Do I still need a link in bio if I use DMs? Yes. Your bio link catches everyone who finds you without a reel, and it is where people go to look around. Keep it tidy and point it to your main page. Use the DM for the specific offer that each reel promotes.
- Can I put a clickable link in a reel caption? Not in the way you might hope. Links in captions are generally not tappable on Instagram, which is a big reason creators say "link in bio" or ask for a comment. A DM gives the viewer a link they can tap straight away.
- Will people be annoyed to get a DM from a comment? Not if they asked for it. The DM is a reply to a comment they wrote on purpose. Keep it short, say what you are sending, and give them one clear button. Avoid sending anything they did not request.
- Which one should I test first? Run the same type of reel twice, once with "link in bio" and once with "comment a word". Compare how many people reach the page. The DM version also shows button taps, so you can see real numbers instead of guessing.
The link in bio and the link in DM are not rivals. One is your home, the other is a doorbell that rings at the perfect moment. Use the DM for the reel's offer, keep the bio as your home base, and you will lose far fewer people between "I want it" and "I have it".
