A DM bubble with a blue link button jumping out of a reel after a comment

You told your viewers to comment a word, and now you have to get them a link. You can paste a raw URL into the message, or you can send it as a button. A button is cleaner, easier to tap and easier to measure, and it makes your message look like it came from a real business. Here is how link buttons work in Instagram DMs and how to write them.

Short answer: Send the link as a button when you reply to a comment. A button shows a short label such as "Get the guide" instead of a long URL, gives people one obvious thing to tap, and lets you count taps. A pasted URL still works, but it looks messier and tells you nothing about who used it.

What is a link button in an Instagram DM?

A link button is a tappable button that sits under your message text. When someone taps it, their phone opens the page you chose. The text on the button is yours: "Download the plan", "See the menu", "Book a spot".

Buttons are part of how Instagram's official messaging works for professional accounts. They appear in the private reply a business sends to a comment, which is the same feature behind "comment GUIDE and I'll send it". You can read how that feature is defined in Meta's documentation on private replies.

The practical difference is simple. With a pasted link, the person has to notice a line of text, tap it and hope it opens. With a button, the call to action is the button itself.

Why does a button beat a pasted URL?

There is nothing wrong with a pasted URL in a message. But for the usual comment-to-DM flow, where hundreds of people may receive the same message, a button wins in a few specific ways.

  • It is clean. Long product and booking URLs often contain tracking text and symbols. A button hides that behind a short label that reads like a sentence.
  • It is obvious. Someone reading on a phone sees one thing to tap. A link buried in a paragraph is easy to miss, and a missed link is a lost sale.
  • It looks trustworthy. A raw link from an account people just met can look like spam. A labelled button under a friendly message looks like something a person set up on purpose.
  • It is measurable. A button tap is a clear signal that someone wanted the thing. In DmReel you see DMs sent and button taps for each automation, so you know which reel and which wording work.
  • It leaves room for two choices. You can offer two buttons in one DM, such as the guide and the shop, so people pick without replying.

How do link buttons work in a DmReel automation?

In DmReel you build the DM for a reel in a few fields: the trigger words, the message text and the buttons. You can add up to two link buttons to the message, each with its own label and its own URL.

There is also a second option: a button that opens the conversation first and then sends the link. It is useful when you want the chat to stay open for a follow-up question, because the person has now interacted with you inside the conversation.

  • Pick the reel. Choose it from your real reels, shown as thumbnails, or set the automation for your next reel before you post it.
  • Choose the trigger words. For example guide, الدليل and GUIDE together. Matching is whole-word and ignores capital letters.
  • Write the message. One or two sentences that say what is coming and why it is useful.
  • Add the button or buttons. Give each a short label and paste the link. Use a link that works well on a phone.
  • Go live. People who comment the word receive the DM, and you can pause or edit the automation at any time.

What should the button text say?

The label is the most-read part of your DM after the first line. Write it like a verb plus the thing the person gets. Keep it short enough to fit on a phone screen without being cut off.

  • "Get the guide" A lead magnet such as a PDF, a checklist or a recipe book.
  • "See the menu" A restaurant or cafe sending its menu or order page.
  • "Shop the collection" A shop sending a collection page or a single product link.
  • "Book your spot" A coach, salon or studio sending a booking link.
  • "Watch the video" A creator sending a long video, a course preview or a webinar replay.
  • "Join the list" An email signup page. Pair it with a line explaining what subscribers get.

Avoid vague labels such as "Click here" or "Link". They tell the person nothing, and they read like the kind of message people are used to ignoring. Specific labels also help you think clearly about what each link is for.

What should the message above the button say?

The button should never be the whole message. Put one friendly line before it that shows you are a person, says what is behind the button and, if you like, uses the person's reason for commenting.

A message for a fitness creator might read: "Thanks for commenting! Here is the 4-week plan I promised. Tap the button and it opens right away." A cafe might write: "Here is our menu for this week. Tap below to see it and order." Keep it short, warm and clear about what happens next.

  • Say thanks. One short sentence is enough.
  • Name the reward. "Here is the guide" tells people they are in the right place.
  • Tell them what the button does. "Tap below to open it" removes any doubt.
  • Leave the door open. Add a line like "Reply here if you have a question" if you are happy to answer.

What are the rules around sending links in DMs?

The rules are the same ones that apply to any comment-to-DM message. The account has to be a professional account. The DM is a private reply to a comment, which can be sent once per comment and within 7 days of it. You should only message people who commented on your content or contacted you first, and your message should match what you promised in the reel.

If you want the full picture, including what can get an account restricted, read is Instagram DM automation allowed. Links should always lead to what you said they would lead to. A button that opens something different from what the reel promised is the fastest way to lose trust.

How do you test whether the button works?

Before you go live, comment the trigger word from a second account or ask a friend to do it. Check that the DM arrives, the text reads well and each button opens the right page on a phone.

After launch, look at the numbers for each automation. If many DMs are sent but few buttons are tapped, the problem is usually the message or the label, not the reel. Try a clearer label, a shorter message or a more specific promise, and compare.

DmReel is free during early access, so you can test several versions without paying for each. If you want to see how it compares with typical paid tools, the comparison page explains it in general terms.

FAQ

  • Can I put the link in the message text instead of a button? Yes. A pasted link works. The button is simply cleaner and gives you tap counts. If your message is very short, a button usually reads better than text with a long URL in it.
  • How many buttons can one DM have? In DmReel you can add up to two link buttons per message. Two choices are usually enough, and more would make people hesitate.
  • What if the person never taps the button? That is normal. Some people read the message and come back later. Because the chat stays in their inbox, they can tap it any time, so keep the link working.
  • Do buttons work for Arabic messages? Yes. Write the label in Arabic, such as "احصل على الدليل", and the message around it in the same language your audience uses. You can combine English and Arabic trigger words in one automation.

A link button is a small detail that makes a big difference: one clear label, one obvious tap, and a number you can learn from. Write the label like a promise, keep the message warm, and test it on your next reel.
