A comment with the word PLAN in a blue pill and a DM bubble with a booking button jumping out of a reel

Most coaches post helpful reels and then lose the people who liked them. Viewers enjoy the tip, scroll on, and never find your booking page. A simple DM funnel fixes that: the reel ends with a keyword, the viewer comments it, and a DM delivers a free guide and the next step. Here is how to build one.

Short answer: An Instagram DM funnel for coaches has three steps. The reel invites a comment keyword such as PLAN, an automatic DM sends a useful free guide, and a second step in the same chat offers a booking link. It works because each person asks for the first step themselves.

What is a DM funnel, in plain words?

A funnel is just the path from "saw your reel" to "booked a call". Most coaches leave that path to chance: a link in bio, a story sticker, a hope. A DM funnel replaces the hope with a short, guided conversation.

The viewer takes the first step by commenting. You respond inside their inbox, where they are not distracted by the feed. That is a better place to build trust than a crowded profile.

  • The reel. It teaches one useful thing and ends with an invitation: "Comment PLAN and I will send it."
  • The comment. One word, typed in two seconds. This is the viewer saying yes.
  • The DM. A private reply with the free guide, plus a button.
  • The next step. A short question or a booking link that follows naturally from the guide.

Why does it work better for coaches than a link in bio?

Coaching is a trust purchase. People book someone only after they feel the coach understands them. A link in bio asks them to leave the video, find the profile, tap, and decide, all in cold mode. A DM arrives warm, a minute after they showed interest, and starts with something useful.

It also gives you a clear signal. Everyone who comments the keyword has raised a hand on that exact topic. You know what they care about because of which reel they commented on. We compare both paths in link in bio vs link in DM.

Step 1: Pick one offer for each reel

A funnel is only as good as its free guide. Choose a freebie that solves a small, real problem and leads naturally to your paid work.

  • Fitness coach. A 4-week starter plan, a home workout PDF, a weekly shopping list.
  • Nutrition coach. A 7-day meal plan, a protein cheat sheet, a Ramadan eating guide.
  • Business or career coach. A one-page offer checklist, a weekly planning template, a pricing worksheet.
  • Mindset or life coach. A morning routine card, a journaling prompt pack, a goal-setting sheet.

Keep it short enough to read in ten minutes. A bloated ebook is something people save and never open. For more ideas, see lead magnet ideas for creators.

Step 2: Say the keyword in the reel

People comment what they are told to comment. Say the keyword out loud in the last seconds of the reel and show it as text on the screen. Pick a word that is easy to type and matches the offer, such as PLAN for a plan or GUIDE for a guide.

A good closing line is: "If you want the full plan, comment PLAN and I will send it to you." Put the same sentence in the caption. Our article on comment LINK reels covers how to phrase this so it sounds natural.

Step 3: Set up the automatic DM

Doing this by hand works for ten comments and breaks at a hundred. Automation sends the DM to everyone who comments your keyword, quickly, while they are still looking at the reel. Here is the flow in DmReel:

  • Connect your account. You need an Instagram professional account, Business or Creator, connected with Instagram's official login.
  • Choose the reel. Pick it from your real reels with thumbnails, or set the automation for your next reel before you post it.
  • Add trigger words. Add PLAN, and maybe the Arabic or other-language version if your audience mixes languages. Matching ignores capital letters and works on whole words.
  • Write the DM. Give the guide first. Add up to two link buttons, or a button that opens the chat and then sends the link.
  • Add a public reply. Pick a few variations of "Check your DMs" so the comments do not look copy-pasted.
  • Go live and test. Comment from another account and check the message on your phone.

DmReel is free during early access, with no card. It sends one DM per person for each automation, even if a fan comments several times. For the full walkthrough, read auto DM for Instagram comments.

Step 4: Write a DM that leads to a booking

The first DM should give the guide, nothing else. Do not ask for a call in the first line. The sequence below lets the person warm up.

Message one, sent automatically: "Hey! Here is the 4-week starter plan you asked for. [Button: Open the plan] Tell me when you finish week one, I would love to hear how it went."

That ending is the bridge. Meta's rules allow one private reply to a comment, and you can send more only after the person answers. So the last line invites a reply, and from there you continue as yourself. Read how this works in Instagram private replies explained.

  • If they reply. Answer personally. Ask one question about their goal, then suggest a free consultation or a call if it fits.
  • If they do not. Leave it. Your guide did its job, and they know where to find you.
  • Booking link. Put it inside the guide itself, on the last page, and in your profile. This way the person meets it after they have read your work.

What should a coach never do in these DMs?

The funnel works because it respects people. These mistakes break it fast.

  • Pitching in the first line. The person came for the guide. Give it first.
  • Making promises about results. Do not guarantee weight loss, income or health outcomes. Describe the method, not a result.
  • Sending long messages. Two or three lines is enough. The guide carries the detail.
  • Following up again and again. One DM, then a conversation only if they answer.

A full example for a nutrition coach

Dina is a nutrition coach in Dubai. Her reel shows three breakfast swaps for busy mornings and ends with "Comment PLAN and I will send you my 7-day meal plan". The DM she set up reads: "Hi! Here is your 7-day meal plan. [Button: Open the plan] Which meal is the hardest for you? Tell me and I will send a tip."

People who answer get a personal reply. Those who finish the plan find a note on the last page about her one-to-one program and a booking link. Nobody was chased, and everyone who booked first received something useful.

FAQ

Do I need a professional account? Yes. Automatic private replies work through Instagram's official tools, which need a professional account, either Business or Creator. Connect it with Instagram's own login.

Can I use this to sell coaching directly in the DM? You can include a link to your offer, but the best results come from giving value first. A free guide, then a conversation, then a booking link. Selling in the first line tends to lose the person.

What if people comment in Arabic or English? Add trigger words in both languages in one automation. DmReel understands Arabic spelling variants, so خطة and الخطة both match, and English and Arabic keywords can sit together.

How soon should the DM arrive? As fast as possible. Instagram rules allow a private reply within 7 days of the comment, but people want the guide while they are still watching. Automation delivers it in seconds, and queues messages if Instagram slows down.
