Switch to an Instagram Professional Account: Step by Step
How to switch to an Instagram professional account, Creator or Business, which one to pick, and why comment-to-DM automation needs it. Takes two minutes.

If you want to send automatic DMs to people who comment on your reels, the first thing to fix is your account type. Instagram only lets apps message commenters on a professional account, and a personal account does not qualify. Switching takes about two minutes, costs nothing and can be undone. Here is how to do it and which type to choose.
Short answer: Open Settings in the Instagram app, tap Account type and tools, then Switch to professional account. Choose Creator if you make content, or Business if you sell products or services, pick a category and confirm. Both types work for auto DMs, and you can change your mind later. Instagram's help page covers the same flow.
What is an Instagram professional account?
Instagram has three kinds of account in practice: personal, Creator and Business. Creator and Business are both called professional accounts. They add tools that a personal profile does not have, such as insights about your reach and followers, and they are the only types that outside apps can connect to for messaging.
That last point is the one that matters for comment-to-DM. Meta's documentation says private replies, the messages sent in response to a comment, are for professional accounts. So even if you never look at the insights, the switch is what opens the door to automation.
You can read Meta's wording in its guide to private replies. Our article on how Instagram private replies work explains the rest of the rules, including the 7-day window.
Creator or Business: which one should you pick?
Most people overthink this step. Instagram describes Creator accounts as the better fit for public figures, content producers, artists and influencers, and Business accounts as the fit for brands and companies that sell something. The honest answer is that the choice does not change whether automation works.
- Pick Creator if your account is about you and your content: a fitness coach, a food blogger, a teacher, a photographer.
- Pick Business if the account represents a shop, a restaurant, a salon or a company, especially when you want a business-style profile with contact details.
- Not sure? Start with the one that matches how people see you today. You can switch between the two types later without losing your posts or followers.
The category you select, such as Personal blog or Clothing store, is just a label shown on your profile. It does not decide whether you end up with a Creator or a Business account, so choose the one that describes you best and move on.
How do you switch to a professional account?
The menu names move around when Instagram updates the app, so treat the labels below as a guide. If something looks different, Instagram's help page has the current steps.
- Open your profile. Tap your profile picture at the bottom right, then the menu icon at the top.
- Go to Settings. Look for Account type and tools in the list of settings.
- Tap Switch to professional account. Instagram will walk you through a few screens.
- Choose Creator or Business. Read the short description of each and tap the one you want.
- Pick a category. Choose the label that fits, and decide whether to show it on your profile.
- Confirm your contact details. Instagram may ask for an email or phone number for a business profile. You can often skip this and add it later.
On a computer the flow is similar: open Settings on instagram.com and look for the professional account option. The app is simpler for most people, so use your phone if you can.
What changes when you switch?
Your posts, reels, followers and messages stay where they are. What changes is the set of tools you see, and a few settings. If your account is private today, check Instagram's help page before switching, because professional profiles are designed to be found by the public and some privacy options may not be available.
This matters for creators who use a private account for personal photos. If that is you, the cleanest answer is a separate account for your business or content, and a professional account there. Never mix your family photos with a public offer.
- Insights appear. You can see how your reels and posts perform, which helps you decide what to give away next.
- Contact options appear. Business profiles can show buttons or details so customers can reach you.
- Messaging tools open up. Apps you authorize through Instagram's own login can reply to comments on your behalf.
How do you connect your account for auto DMs?
Once the switch is done, connecting is quick. You never type your Instagram password into a third party. You log in through Instagram's official login screen and give permission to manage comments and messages.
- Sign up. Create a DmReel account with Google, email or Instagram. It is free during early access and needs no card.
- Connect Instagram. Use the official login and pick your professional account.
- Pick a reel. Choose it from your real reels, or set the automation for your next reel before you post it.
- Add trigger words and a DM. For example GUIDE and رابط, and a short message with a link button.
If you want to see how the tool fits into a bigger plan, read how to set up an auto DM before posting a reel, or visit the Instagram auto DM page.
What are the common problems after switching?
- The account does not show up when connecting. Check that you chose a professional type and that you log in with the same Instagram account you switched. Log out of other accounts in your browser first.
- You switched on the wrong account. Instagram lets you hold several accounts in one app. Make sure the right one is active when you open Settings.
- The option is missing. Update the Instagram app, then look again. If it is still missing, the help page above lists where it moved.
- You regret the type. You can change between Creator and Business, or return to a personal account, from the same settings area.
FAQ
Does switching to a professional account cost money? No. Instagram does not charge for a Creator or Business account. Some tools built on top of it are paid, but the account type itself is free to switch to and free to leave.
Will I lose followers or posts if I switch? No. Your content, followers and messages stay. What changes is the tools you see. If your account is private, read Instagram's help page first, since privacy options for professional profiles work differently.
Can I go back to a personal account? Yes. Instagram lets you switch back or change between Creator and Business whenever you like. If you do, automation that depends on a professional account stops working until you switch again.
Is a Creator account enough for auto DMs? Yes. Meta's messaging documentation covers professional accounts, and both Creator and Business are professional accounts. Pick the type that fits you and do not worry about missing a feature for DMs.
Switching is the smallest step on the way to answering every comment with a link, and it is the one most people postpone. Do it once, connect your account, and your next reel can reply to everyone while you sleep. For the bigger picture, see whether Instagram DM automation is allowed.
